Eternal God,
We are a fragile people
Living a precarious existence
As we seek to hold communities together.
Why did You make it so easy for us
To see what divides us
Rather than to recognize what unites us?
Oh.
You did make it easy for us
To make common cause.
Commandments about
Love
Respect
Honesty
Charity
Justice
Righteousness
Are supposed to enable us to
Live in some measure of peace
With each other
Side by side.
The problem is ours.
Some of us have
Closed our ears
Covered our eyes
Hardened our hearts
Shut our hands
To anyone
Or to any idea
Which we consider foreign
Different
Strange.
Teach us that
Nothing is different or strange
Remind us that
Eyes belong open
Ears should allow all types of sounds to be heard
Hearts should be open
Hands should be outstretched
To everyone
Enough for us
To overcome differences
Sufficient for us
To sustain and strengthen our mutual understanding
So that unity will not be beyond our grasp.
Eternal God,
We are a needy people
But we can help each other
We live uncertain lives
But we can provide assistance and confidence
That would draw us close.
We may lack knowledge and awareness
Of who we all are
But we can journey together
On a new path of discovery
And find
Peace.
