Eternal One,
Ruler of the Universe,
Creator of times and seasons,
May the beginning of spring
Remind us of the possibilities of positive change
In preserving our world,
In renewing our enthusiasm for life
In opening up in our souls the desire for peace
In revealing the bonds among all people
And the interconnections between us and the gifts of nature all around us.
May the light of Your wisdom spark fresh insights within us
So that we will always choose right and good,
Kindness and compassion
Love and hope.
As we affirm that You are One,
May we discover Your unifying presence
Wherever we turn our gaze
Evening to morning
Year to year.

Awake and determined- March 13, 2023

I should have seen it coming.
While on the Multicultural Committee for the Topeka Public Schools, from the late 1980s through 2006, I helped to create a multicultural calendar for educational purposes.   Our committee was inter-religious and multi-ethnic, so the holidays listed included national holidays, observances connected with certain cultural groups represented among student/staff/parents, and major holidays of faith communities.
Yes, there was once a complaint from a parent - only one that I knew of - about the need for all those holidays listed, given how few people in the district observed those holidays.   It was a sign that some preferred only listing holidays of the majority (based on skin color and religion).   We acknowledged that with sadness and with determination to keep moving forward.
In a meeting with local faith leaders in Topeka in the mid-1990s,  we were discussing how we might come together for study or worship that would assemble a broad range of participants.   One local evangelical minister protested, saying he would not accept expressions of certain groups with which he disagreed, claiming, with disdain, “THAT’S PLURALISM!”
   Well, yes.  It is.
God created a diverse world, and people developed, over the centuries, different ways of viewing the human community.    Some see the divine spark and image in everyone and everything.  Others would draw a restricted circle around only what and whom they accept as appropriate.
Being a believer in a religion that declared long ago that “the righteous of all nations will have a share in the world to come (whatever that world might be) could probably be defined as “woke,” given that, I am sure, some people who eschew “pluralism” would claim that only members of their group could be righteous in the eyes of the divine.
I prefer not to sleepwalk my way into submission to a narrow view of humanity and the world, but to keep my eyes open for new ideas, relationships and understandings.
Maybe there are more partners out there in doing just that than I might imagine.

Eternal God,
Who brings on the evening
And the promise of a new day to come,
Help us to bring more light into our darkness.
May hope overtake despair.
May healing be a balm to any challenges to our well-being.
May compassion and empathy overcome cruelty.
May goodness suffuse our souls and deeds
So that there will be no space for indifference.
May understanding and knowledge
Leave no room for ignorance and prejudice.
May confidence in our ability to think for ourselves
And a desire to learn from the wisdom of many faiths and peoples
Lead us to recognize the interconnections
That bind humanity together.
You, Eternal One, are our guide towards our own oneness
In our homes and communities
Between neighborhoods and nations
That will reflect the Oneness
That is You.

Eternal One,
Our companion from one generation to the next,
Every day, we traverse towards
New milestones along the path of life,
Which recall moments of significance
From birth to maturity to further growth
As we gain fresh insights
And renewed spirit
From experiences that enrich our souls.
Give us light that will dispel the darkness around us.
Grant us strength for times of challenge.
Fill us with confidence and determination
To overcome cruelty and selfishness
By responding with kindness and generosity
That will swiftly spread from one heart to another.
Unite us so that the night will be as bright as noon
For all people on this world of ours.
In Your Oneness, may we continue to strive to be one.

Eternal God,

Who continually creates

morning and evening,

Day and night,

Help us to remember that love

Is a foundation for life

And a reflection of the light that graces our lives.

We are commanded to love You

With all our heart, soul and might.

Yet, we do not fulfill that love without also

Loving our neighbor and

Loving the stranger,

beginning with a love of ourselves

As worthy human beings

That can serve as our basis for the

Empathy and compassion,

Generosity and kindness

That can lead us to reach out to the people around us

And to connect in ways that are meaningful and lasting.

It is in those connections, our Creator, that we begin

To create a oneness among us

That reflects the Oneness that is You.

Eternal One,

Creator of the Universe,

Who shines light upon this world

And into our hearts

Lead us through the darkness

So that we will not be overcome

With sadness and despair.

Guide us through the obstacles

That life sometimes seems to place

Along our path.

Strengthen us with wisdom

That will direct us to choose

Cooperation over division

Kindness over callousness

Peace over conflict

Love over hatred

Sincere concern over indifference.

Bind us together as one human family

Enveloped by Your Oneness

And Your enduring presence among us.

Creator of the Universe,
Sustainer of our lives,
Shine a light into our souls
That will enable us to better see
Our potential to act with goodness and kindness.
Serenade us with the sounds of nature
And the songs in our hearts
That bring us joy
That activate precious memories
And that challenge us to unite our voices
In a harmonious chorus.
Support us as we stand tall
In the struggle for justice
In the steps we take towards true freedom
In our desire to preserve decency and compassion
In a world that needs more respect and consideration
So that the darkness of night will not be cause for fear
But a time for contemplation and hope.
As Your Oneness is the foundation of our existence,
May the oneness we create between us
Suffuse our essence with the glow of Your presence.
